Bonnaroo 2010: Friday

High Temp: 91°F Low Temp: 70°F

I awoke promptly at 6:30am. (We were now in the central time zone - an hour earlier) The sun was beaming from the east as I had failed to create shade on that side. I got up and fixed it.

I also spent $7 dollars at the Garner Fructis sponsored showers. They opened at 7 am and I walked right in, (the girls side had a line). They were small, simple stalls crammed into trailers but a shower none-the-less. My hair smelled fruity.

Breakfast consisted of a hard-boiled egg, 1/2 cinnamon raisin bagel, fresh mozzarella cheese, and grapes - all pre-packaged by the misses, love notes included. Raylon brought fresh coffee grounds and, with Beth's coffee press and my campstove, fresh java was a great way to start the day. Buzzzzzz.

Went into Centeroo to catch the 2nd appearance of The Entrance Band. Then it was off to see comedian Conan O'Brien. The line for the [air conditioned] comedy tent started at 5am. Thankfully, they broadcast his set on the Lunar Stage for the rest of us.

"I've come a long way," he said. "In six months, I've gone from hosting the Tonight Show to headlining at a refugee camp." He brought out the inflatable bat from Meatloaf's "Bat Out of Hell" tour. He came out later wearing Eddie Murphy's purple leather suit from "Raw." He made frequent and perfect impersonations of the rapper Ludacris.

The Steep Canyon Rangers, (who I would see again shortly); a couple of songs with NAS and Damien Marley; "Mr. Bojangles," by the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band; some bouncing with Ok Go; and the mighty Tenacious D featuring Jack Black.

Tenacious D (above) came to rock. "Just a stop," as Jack Black put it, "in the middle of our one day tour." They played their songs. But they threw in some performance as well ... including a bit where Black negotiated a deal for Pick of Destiny 2, (though he was supposed to replace Kyle with "that dude from Paul Blart: Mall Cop"); a visit from The Metal, (a giant robot), and Satan himself. Good times.

After all that, I found Steve Martin and the Steep Canyon Rangers at That Tent. Steve was goofy and thankful when he spoke and was simply amazing when he played the banjo. In fact, they were all amazing and the crowd rooted and cheered. In the crowd for Steve Martin, I found Natalie from the Baltimore/Nashville area and her friend Pam from Connecticut/Nashville. Natalie had markers and was a human erase board.

In between sets, I had time to visit the Adult Swim area and play some Zombie Hooker Nightmare. Raylon played Robot Unicorn Attack. I also ran into comedian Margaret Cho

The Kings of Leon put on a hell of a show. Being from Tennessee, they took great pride in the performance. Caleb (lead singer) did intermittent shots on stage and got plenty of encouragement from the crowd. They played "Trani," a song they hadn't played for years and covered The Pixes' "Where is my Mind?" It was spot on. The crowd went nuts. 50,000 people danced. They also brought out two new songs from the next album. They sounded upbeat and fun.

Setlist: Crawl, Taper Jean Girl, My Party, Be Somebody, Immortals, Molly's Chambers, Fans, Milk, Closer, Mary, Wasted Time, Four Kicks, The Bucket, Radioactive, Charmer, Where is my Mind? (Pixies cover), Sex on Fire, Notion, On call, Southbound, Trani
Encore: Knocked Up, Manhattan, Use Somebody

The Flaming Lips, Bonnaroo 2010
The Flaming Lips, Bonnaroo 2010

The Flaming Lips = A spectacle, like a parade or a street party, blasting you in the face. Also, Wayne Coyne is completely off his rocker.  The band entered the stage through the digital image of a glowing orb strategically placed on a women's body. Wayne took off into the crowd via his bubble. Balloons and confetti were released en masse. And that was just the third song.

set 1: The Fear, Worm Mountain, Silver Trembling Hands, She Don't Use Jelly, The Yeah Yeah Yeah Song, I Can Be a Frog, Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots, Pt. 1, See the Leaves, Laser Hands, Pompeii Am Götterdämmerung, The W.A.N.D., Do You Realize?
set 2: (Dark Side of the Moon): Speak to Me / Breath, On the Run, Time, The Great Gig in the Sky, Money, Us and Them, Any Colour You Like, Brain Damage, Eclipse

I dipped the F'Lips to see The Crystal Method Dj set. Then walked back to the site with "This transmission is coming to you" in the background. [Old school.]
