Bonnaroo 2013: Friday
High Temp: 90°F Low Temp: 60.1°F
I'm up early and circling Tent Only looking for the infamous Inforoo Brunch. The amount of tents crammed into this space is both staggering and impressive. At some point, I dive in and immediately run into my friend and comedian, Adam Garrison. Back on the search, I run into a couple who then walk right to the party.
The brunch is full-to-the-brim with food, beverages and people. They're all from the Inforoo Pro-boards so everyone has a nametag with their online handle. I drink a mimosa and meet a lot of folks. It's great to put faces with the names and be surrounded by people who love the ROO as much as me. Many of these folks have been going to the festival since the beginning. I leave some stickers behind and split. Say hi on Inforoo.
Local Natives - What Stage - 2:30 pm
I've seen them before, (That Tent 2010), and it was so nice to see them up on the What Stage. It's picturesque and hot and The Natives are rocking while Raylon schools some kids in hacky sack.
Setlist: You & I; Breakers; Wide Eyes; Wooly Mammoth; Ceilings; Shape Shifter; Heavy Feet; Airplanes; Colombia; World News; Who Knows, Who Cares; Sun Hands
Of Monsters and Men - Which Stage - 3:30 pm
I get to the set late but find the VIP 'viewing area' on the right side. It's fairly close to the stage but a bit full. The band is loud and blissfully amazing, especially to certain medicated people in the crowd.
Setlist: Dirty Paws; From Finner; Slow and Steady;Mountain Sound; Your Bones; Skeletons (Yeah Yeah Yeahs cover); Love Love Love; King and Lionheart; Beneath My Bed; Lakehouse; Little Talks; Six Weeks; Yellow Light
Foals - This Tent - 5:15 pm
Another act in my rotation on Spotify, Foals belts out the synthy-guitar. A girl rides a blow up alligator across the crowd. It's crazy. I'm a proud fan.
Setlist: Prelude; Total Life Forever; Olympic Airways; My Number; Bad Habit; Milk & Black Spiders; Spanish Sahara; Red Socks Pugie; Late Night; Providence; Inhaler; Two Steps, Twice
Paul McCartney - What Stage - 9:00 pm
A presentation on the jumbotrons is actually a music video that documents Paul's life from childhood. When he takes the stage, the crowd is the largest I've ever seen on the farm. EVERYONE IS HERE.
The jumbotrons make him 40-ft tall. His music is loud and crisp and his band is tight. He tells a story about a time in London with Jimi Hendrix and Eric Clapton and an out-of-tune guitar. He tells another one about Hendrix who learned “Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band” and opened a show with it two days after it was released, (and McCartney was there to witness it). Later he mentions "That's some really good weed I smell out there." He shouts "Free Pussy Riot" right before playing 'Live And Let Die" which turns into a wondrous surprise. During the chorus, fireballs burst up from the roof, flames jet on stage and there are quick dj cuts in the song.
It's outrageously awesome. He then follows up with a rendition of "Hey Jude" where EVERYONE sings along and it's really the most perfect Bonnaroo moment. Ever.
♥
At some point, someone from the crowd hands him a stuffed walrus. He places it on the piano and totally serenades it. He leaves the stage after three encores and relentless cheers. A confetti shower consumes the stage. It's an exhilarating show and I'm totally dazzled.
Setlist: Eight Days a Week (The Beatles song); Junior's Farm (Wings song); All My Loving (The Beatles song); Listen to What the Man Said (Wings song); Let Me Roll It (Wings song) ("Foxy Lady" snippet); Paperback Writer (The Beatles song); My Valentine; Nineteen Hundred and Eighty-Five (Wings song); The Long and Winding Road (The Beatles song); Maybe I'm Amazed; Midnight Special (Lead Belly cover) (first since 10 May 2003); We Can Work It Out (The Beatles song); Another Day; And I Love Her (The Beatles song); Blackbird (The Beatles song); Here Today; Your Mother Should Know (The Beatles song); Lady Madonna (The Beatles song); All Together Now (The Beatles song); Lovely Rita (The Beatles song); Mrs. Vandebilt (Wings song); Eleanor Rigby (The Beatles song); Being for the Benefit of Mr. Kite! (The Beatles song); Something (The Beatles song); Ob-La-Di, Ob-La-Da (The Beatles song); Band on the Run (Wings song); Back in the U.S.S.R. (The Beatles song); Let It Be (The Beatles song); Live and Let Die (Wings song); Hey Jude (The Beatles song)
Encore:
Day Tripper (The Beatles song); Hi, Hi, Hi (Wings song); Get Back (The Beatles song)
Encore 2:
Yesterday (The Beatles song); Helter Skelter (The Beatles song)
Encore 3:
Golden Slumbers (The Beatles song); Carry That Weight (The Beatles song); The End (The Beatles song)
The XX - Which Stage - 11:30 pm
Late to this one because of Sir Paul. They are soft spoken with an excellent sound and lovely tempo. I was curious how they would be live. It's nice to be happily surprised. But they played a short set which is a bummer.
ZZ Top - This Tent - 12:00 am
The 80's live with full-throttle guitar fury and glorious, albeit grey, beards. The view from my chair tastes better with a $7 beer.
Pretty Lights - Which Stage - 1:30 am
Late start ... then BOOM with music and a huge light display on stage. The experience was intensely loud and fully lived up to the name. The moon glowed nearby. What a great night but I just can't make it 'til sunrise.
Peace out. \n/_
Setlist: I Can See It in Your Face; World of Illusion; (Unknown); Solar Sailer; How We Do; More Important Than MJ; My Other Love; Hot Like Dimes; Color of My Soul; Still Night; Maybe Tomorrow; Time (Pink Floyd cover); Chicago Bulls Theme Remix; The Time Has Come; Around The Block; Hot Like Sauce; So Much In The Dark; Country Roads; Pretty Lights vs. Led Zeppelin; Yellow Bird; If I Could Feel Again; Out of Time; Can't Stop Me Now; After Midnight; I Know The Truth; Pretty Lights vs. Radiohead vs. Nirvana vs. NIN; So Bright; (Unknown); Total Fascination / Sunday School; You Get High; Finally Moving; Bump N Hustle; Head Nod Freedom; (Unknown); Exodus; We Must Go On
