Planet Roo, Bonnaroo 2012

Woke up to a, dare I say, chilly morning? That was a first for me at Bonnaroo and it was awesome. I attached tarps and tent poles to the side of the RV for shade. Had fresh fruit and a muffin for breakfast. Filled the coolers from igloocoolers.com with two bags of ice for $7.

Tried to mentally prepare for the long weekend. I wanted to see a lot of music over the next four days ...

Bonnaroo locker:
On the way in, we secured the key for an extra large locker which proved to be valuable in two ways:
1) If you are camped far away, it provides a great place to stash things to replenish during the day, (trail bars, chairs, sweatshirt, sunscreen, etc), plus it was large enough to fit our beach chairs.

2) If you're anything like me, you accumulate crap throughout the day. It's nice to drop it off without walking all the way back to camp.

Downsides:
- You only get one key which is tough to share with multiple people.
- The locker may not be waterproof, and is definitely not heat proof.
- And most importantly, it's outside Centeroo, which can be a pain if the lines are long.

*Someone randomly drew a mushroom on our locker. Thank you, whoever you are - it made it easier to find!

Bonnaroo Chris and Shaun 2012
Bonnaroo Chris and Shaun 2012

Shaun from New Orleans was the 1st person to find me in 2012!

The line at our entrance into Centeroo (north entrance, by The Other Tent) was pretty long, so Raylon and I jumped onto the rear-bumper of an RV and hitched a ride to the Arch entrance which was much shorter.

Eventually found a nice location for the first show at The Other Tent and immediately found $20 on ground. The first couple Sweetwater 420 Ale's were courtesy of Bonnaroo. Damn good start.

EMA at Bonnaroo 2012
EMA at Bonnaroo 2012
First band: EMA  4:14pm
(Which stands for Erika M. Anderson, btw.) My first exposure to this artist and she was great. She sang in french at first, and the her voice grew steadily stronger until she was belting it out. She's sorta Bjork-like.

The band was clear and featured a kick-ass violinist. I also learned that they stayed in tents in the guest camping area, which is pretty legit. According to SPIN: Anderson declares: "You think there'd be more weed in guest camping. Everyone's walking around like, 'Heyyyy, do you guys...' And I'm like, 'No, but get back to us if you find it.' So I sent out a tweet: 'We need some 420 in guest camping.'"

SETLIST: Stand; Angelo; The Grey Ship; Marked; Milkman; Butterfly Knife; Archangel (Samhain cover); California; White Like Heaven

I tried the 'Dirty South' wrap from Eatbox. Peppercorn seasoned beef with onions, tater tots and bacon scallion sauce for $9. It was juicy and delicious. [Classy marketing]

In fact, there was a splendid variety of food being served all over Bonnaroo.

The Lonely Forest - Enjoyed their songs. Fun stuff, I plan to listen to them more.

Dale Earnhardt Jr Jr  7:15pm
I was looking forward to this band and they didn't disappoint. The crowd was large and I stayed to the side of the tent, sitting comfortably in my backpack chair. They shouted about Detroit, busted out some Beach Boys and Whitney Houston, and all just around kicked-ass. The singer said the band was going to leave a bottle of Dom Perignon in a porta-pottie, "Whoever finds it, goddammit, have a good time!"

SETLIST: Morning Thought; An Ugly Person On A Movie Screen; When I Open My Eyes; God Only Knows (The Beach Boys cover); It's A Corporate World; Skeletons; If It Wasn't You... (Whitney Houston cover); Jessica; Simple Girl; Vocal Chords; The Fisherman; We Almost Lost Detroit; (Gil Scott-Heron cover); Nothing But Our Love

Phantogram - 10:15 pm
This was a new artist. I listened to them a bit on Spotify but the live show was impressive. Their songs were driving and the crowd grew to be huge - possibly the biggest tent crowd of the year - We'll have to see. In the meantime, these guys are getting more rotation my music player.

SETLIST: Intro; Bloody Palms; Running From the Cops; Mouthful of Diamonds; As Far as I Can See; Turning Into Stone; 16 Years; Voices; Don't Move; Turn It Off; When I'm Small

Alabama Shakes - 11:30 pm
Sound was an issue. I wasn't under the tent but I wasn't THAT far away. Gave it a couple songs, then had to find something else. I heard they were really great. :(

Big Gigantic
Absolutely no sound issues here. BG's beats had the crowd bouncing non-stop in step with an ultra-blinding light display on stage. [I wonder if the people up front got a tan.] Totally fun way to close out the night.

It was a chilly walk back to the RV.
